Two resistors of resistances R and 2R are connected in series in an electrical circuit. Calculate the ratio of the electrical power consumed by R and 2R.



Let us pass a current 'i' into the circuit.

Power consumed by resistor R=P1= (i^2)*R  [P=V*I=I*R*I=(I^2)*R]
Power consumed by resistor 2R=P2= (i^2)*2R

Total power consumed by circuit=P=(i^2)*3R 
[For series combination R=R1+R2 =>R(series)=R+2R=3R]

Ratio pf powers=(P1/P):(P2/P) = 1:2.
