What is the difference between a dissecting and a compound microscope?

Ncert solutions for Class 11th Biology Lab Manual Chapter 1 Exercise 1 Question 3

They are both "light" microscopes. The main difference is that a dissecting microscope is always binocular, so that the image can be seen in 3D, which is required for accurate dissection. Dissecting 'scopes have a lower magnification (usually a maximum of about 20X ) than what you refer to as a "light" microscope (frequently a maximum of about 1000X ).
