The structure of endoplasmic reticulum is revealed only through the electron microscope. It forms a complex network of tubular membrane system throughout the cytoplasm. At places, this network is connected with the plasma membrane at one end and with the nuclear membrane at the other end forming continuous channels from plasma membrane to the
nuclear membrane.

The endoplasmic reticulum occurs in two forms:
.smooth endoplasmic reticulum
.Rough endoplasmic reticulum

The functions of endoplasmic reticulum are:

.It forms the supporting framework of the cell.

. It divides the cell into small compartments for different metabolic activities.

. It is associated with the synthesis and storage of materials.

. Rough endoplasmic reticulum is the site of protein synthesis.

. Its channels act as pathways for the transport of materials from one part of the cell to the other, hence it is called the circulatory system of the cell.

hope this helps.. :)
plzzz mark it as the best..

THE ENDOPLASMIC RETICULUM IS A MEMBRANEOUS NETWORK .
THEY HELP IN TRANSPORTATION OS SUBSTANCES THROUGHOUT THE CELL.
THEY ALSO HELP IN MEMBRANE BIOGENESIS.
THEY S.E.R  SYNTHESIS STEROID HORMONES .
THE R.E.R SYNTHESIS THE RIBOSOMES .
THE S.E.R SYNTHESIS GLYCOGEN WHICH HELPS IN DETOXICFICATION AND IS PRESENT IN LIVERS.
