The rate of respiration in aquatic animals is much faster compared to the terrestrial organisms. Because the solubility of oxygen in water is low so, less oxygen is available to the aquatic animals.
Fish takes in water through their mouth and force it to through the gills where the dissolves oxygen is taken up by the blood. The carbon dioxide produces by the respiration is brought back by the blood into the gills for expelling into the surrounding water.
