Actually Relative density or specific gravity, is the ratio of density of a substance to the density of any referrence ( say water ) .

If the substance's relative density is less than 1 with respect to any referrence , say example water , then it is less dense than the referrence , if greater than 1 denser than the referrence .

For e.g. if you take water as a referrence , substances who have relative density less than 1 will float on water & greater than 1 will sink & equal will be submerged .
