Dhan means money or Goddess of money - Lakshmi devi.

Deepavali or deewali is the festival of lights to celebrate the killing of Narakasur.  It is a vaishnavite festival.  Laxmi the wife of Lord Vishnu Narayan and the Hindu goddess of money is part of Lord Narayan.  She stays in the heart of the God.  So every vaishnavite festival is associated with Lakshmi devi.

All people and especially merchants perform the pooja for Lakshmi devi on the Dhan triodashi day (two days before deewali amavasya day).

The pooja is done in the evening or at sun set time.  Many sweets are prepared.  Houses are cleaned.  People light  oil wicks in many "diye" .  This is to invite the goddess to come and stay with them in the house the whole year long.  On this day in all temples either shaivite or vaishnavite , pooja is performed for Lakshmi devi.
