Technically french horn is just called horn. We need to remember that its origin lies not in France but in Germany so the informal name of the instrument is rather invalid. 

Horn is a brass instrument technically similar to other, like trumpet for example. It is obviously bigger in size than most of them. What's important is that it's made from 6.1m of apropriately curved and shaped tubing. It's sound is deeper and lower than that of a trumpet for example. It is also a bit less dynamic than for example - a saxophone.
