A convenient way of finding the direction of magnetic field associated with a current-carrying conductor. Imagine that you are holding a current-carrying straight conductor in your right hand such that the thumb points towards the direction of current. Then your fingers curl around the conductor in the direction of the field lines of the magnetic field, as shown in the following figure. This is known as the right-hand thumb rule.

The Maxwell right hand thumb rule indicates the direction of the magnetic field in a direction of current. If the thumb of the right hand points along the direction of current, then the remaining curled fingers of the same hand gives the direction of the magnetic field due to the current. When the position of the thumb will be upward, the curled fingers will be anti-clockwise and the magnetic field will be anti-clockwise too and vise versa.
