Consider am object of mass ,m . let it be raised to a height ,h from the ground. a force is required to do this. the minimum force required to raise this object is equal to the weight of the object, mg.let the work done on the object against the gravity be ,W. i.e.
W= force * displacement
W= mg*h
therefore W=mgh

Let a body situated h meter height above the surface
the mass of the body be m
P.E of the body=work done to lift the mass
               =force*displacement
           =m*g*h
         =mgh
