Literal meaning means that the words that have been used to describe a particular thing,mean exactly the same as their meaning. For example,Ravi literally slipped down the stairs.Now here,the word 'literally'is emphasising the fact that Ravi did slip down the stairs. Metaphorical meaning on the other hand,means that you've said something but in a very accentuated manner,to describe something that actually happened.For example,you say 'I waited for her for nearly a century but she didn't come.'Now you cannot possibly wait for someone for a century but you are saying this because you want others to know that you did wait for her for quiet a long time.
