When a river meets the standing water of a sea at the coast, it quickly loses velocity and the heaviest particles drop out. The fine suspended load may be carried further out into the water before it settles out and sinks to the bottom. The sediment deposited in a delta is laid down in layers or beds each containing various types of sediment. The position and composition of these beds depend on how far they were carried by the river's flow before being deposited.
