The alveoli in the lungs are adapted to maximize gaseous exchange- the membrane is thin and the blood capillaries are close to the membrane so the distance for diffusion of gases is very small

The adaptations in the alveoli are

the alveolar wall is very thin (one cell thick) so that gaseous exchange can take place easily.

also capillary surround the alveoli so that they can absorb the oxygen from the inhaled air and give but the co2 from the exhaled air
