Its because of the craters formed on it due to collisions of various meteoroids.

Moon is a very small celestial body.If a celestial body is very small it doesn't have atmosphere on it. Due to lack of atmosphere, these craters aren't filled and remain there for years.

On earth, this doesn't happen because if any meteoroid strikes our earth surface, it is eroded by the winds. On moon, this doesn't happen.
