Density is the mass of the molecules present in unit volume of a substance. Whereas, relative density is the density of a substance in comparison to the density of water which is 1gm/cc or 1000kg/m*3 So, r.d= density of substance/density of water . It is a unit less quantity.

Relative density of a substance is defined as the ratio of the density of the substance to the density of water at 4 degrees Celsius. Another term used for relative density is specific gravity.
