What was the role of the zamindar in Mughal administration?

NCERT Class 7th Social Science (Our Pasts II) Chapter 4- The Mughal Empire

We know that the income for the Mughals was mostly from the taxes given by the poor peasants. They Mughals cannot directly come and collect the taxes right therefore they used to appoint the zamindars who will collect the taxes from the people and give it to them. The zamindars were the heads of the places which they were appointed by the Mughals. Therefore I conclude that the zamindars played a vital role in the Mughal administration.
