Under the doctrine of lapse , any dependent Indian state would pass into British hands if the ruler died without a male heir.
it was unjust as the policy did not recognize the right of adopted children or female heir to inherit the throne.

Under the doctrine of lapse, a ruler had to put his own son on the throne or else the British would take over that kingdom.
Even an adopted son or female heir could not rule that Kingdom.
