Railways spread in the Indian subcontinent 1850s onward. And due to that a large number of trees were cut. This was because a large number of timber was required to lay down sleepers, which were necessary to hold the tracks together. The british built the railways for their own trade needs which led to the huge deforestation of Indian forests.
