    When a school  bell is hit by a hammer or a hard metallic rod, the bell vibrates vigorously and at high frequency.  These vibrations create waves in the air around the bell.  The particles in air  vibrate to and fro.  This disturbance is propagated in all directions.  The particles vibrate and make the adjacent particles vibrate.

   These vibrations create  compressions and rarefactions in air.  These compressions and rarefactions propagate as waves.

   The frequency of the sound produced is same as the frequency at which the bell vibrates.  As the elastic and metallic character of a bell retains vibrations for a long time, sound waves produced and heard over a long distance.
