The eastern edge of Deccan plateau is known as eastern ghats. They are low hills dissected by rivers like Mahanadi, Godavari, Kaveri and Krishna. They are locally known by different names such as Javadi hills, the Palconda hills etc. The highest peak of eastern ghats is Mahendragiri in Orissa ( 1501 m ) above sea level. They receive moderate rainfall while the western edge of Deccan Plateau is known as western ghats. They are comparatively higher and continuous. They are locally known by different names like Sahyadri, Nilgiri etc. The highest peak of western ghats is Anaimudi (2,695 m) in Anaimalai hills. They receive heavy rainfall during monsoon season.
