Helen and Martha Washington, the cook's child, were constant companions. Martha understood her signs and Helen found it easy in making her do as she wished. They spent a great deal of time together in the kitchen, kneading dough bowls, helping making ice creams, grinding coffee, quarreling over the cake bowl and feeding the hens and turkeys that swarmed about their kitchen steps. Helen and Martha also went egg hunting together. They also had a love for mischief.
