Call the total number of students x.

We know that x\frac{2}{5} of number of students come by car while x\frac{1}{4} come by bus and \frac{1}{3} walk alone to school and the rest are escorted by their parents.

We also know that 224 students walk on their own. And it is represented as \frac{1}{3}. This might as well means thatx\frac{1}{3}=224 . We can continue that to find how much is total.

x\frac{1}{3}=224
\frac{x}{3}=224
224*3=x
x=732.

Therefore the total number of students is 732.
