Functions of proteins  :-

They do most of the work in cells and are required for the structure,function, and regulation of the body's tissues and organs. 

Proteins are made up of hundreds or thousands of smaller units called amino acids, which are attached to one another in long chains.

The important functions of proteins are:-

. Structural components- proteins are essential components of cytoplasm, cytomembranes and chromosomes.

.Growth and repair- They are essential for the synthesis of new protoplasm and formation of cellular components. Thus, they are required for tissue repair and growth.

.Enzymes- Some proteins act as biocatalysts. They catalyse various metabolic processes such as digestion of food and oxidation of foodstuffs(respiration).

.Hormones- Protein also act as important hormones.

.Protection- They act as antibodies against foreign antigens and germs.

.Contractile proteins- Contractile proteins such as actin and myosin form muscle fibres and helps in the contraction of muscles.
