A hockey ball of mass 200g travelling at 10m/s is struck by a hockey stick so as to return it along its original path with a velocity at 5m/s.Calculate the change of linear momentum occurred in the motion of the hockey ball by the force applied by the hockey stick.

Mass (m)=200 grams=0.2 kg, velocity (v1)=10 m/s
The momentum the hockey ball was having when it was going towards the stick 
initial momentum(p1)=m×v1
p1=2 kg m/sec
Now, the final momentum  (p2) of the ball after being striked by the stick will be :
where v2=5 m/sec
So,
p2=m×v2
⇒p2=0.2×5
p2=1 kg m/sec
Now the change in momentum will be p2-p1=2-1=1kg m/sec                 Ans.
