When atoms bombarded with alpha particles, only few in million suffer deflection, others pass out undeflected. This is because 1) the force of replusion on the moving alpha particle is small 2) the force of attraction of alpha particle to the oppositely charged electron is small 3) there is only one nucleus & large no of electron 4) the nucleus occupies much smaller volume compared to the volume of the atom.
