We know that velocity,V=d/t
now,we have v₁=40 km/hr
and v₂=60km/hr
and time for the total journey is t=8 hrs
length of distance,d=(v₁+v₂)/2.t
so, d=(40+60)/2(8)
       = 100/2(8)
         =400km

Let 2x be the distance the man travels. therefore 
x/40+x/60=85x/120=8x/24=8x=24*8=192.
but the distance he travelled was 2x. hence he trvalled 2*192=384 kms.
