An iron nail sinks in water but a ship made of iron floats because average density of a ship is less than water and it weight is equal to the weight of water displaced ( in easy words... a ship has large ballast tank which contains air and since air's density is very less as compared to water the average density ( density of iron + density of air \ 2 ) is less than water

A needle made of iron has density same as iron. The buoyant force due to displaced water is much less than it's weight as the displaced water is very less in volume(same as that of needle). So the needle sinks.

A ship is made of iron has lot of free space filled with air. It displaces a lot of water as the base is very wide. The weight of water so displaced provides buoyant force higher than the total weight of ship. So  the ship floats on the surface.
