One of the most common ways people earned money in the medieval period was through selling produce. Most people would have cultivated land that was owned by either the lord of the local manor or the church. They would be required to pay a tithe, which would normally be a set amount of produce/livestock to the landlord. Once this had been done, anything extra than what they needed to eat could be sold at local market.
