When a non-metal combines with oxygen it forms an acid.
If we take the non-metal as N.

N + O_2 =NO_2

where NO_2I= is the acid.

VERY IMPORTANT NOTE:
1. The symbol N does not represent the element Nitrogen.
2.The non-metal is always written before the oxygen in the acid's formula.
 E.g.-CO_2  and not O_2C!!
I hope this helped you!
