This bill enabled Indian judges to take up the trial of Europeans but it lead to strong opposition by the British and Europeans and government was forced to withdraw it. It again led to resentment among the educated classes.

The illbert bill (1833) passed during the viceroyalty of lord Ripon (1880-1884)allowed the judges of Indian origin to judge and inquire the Europeans in India.The Europeans in India reacted harshly against this act as they did not wanted the Indian judges to judge them in any court matter. They wanted the European judge to judge them in all the issues and help them tackling the problems. ultimately the government amended the bill
