In complex multicellular organisms, there are special lineages of cells for reproduction which have half the number of chromosomes and half the amount of DNA. These cells are the gametes. When the male gamete combines with the female gamete, it results in formation of a zygote which inherits DNA from both mother and father thus, restoring the normal amount of DNA in the offspring. (Half + Half = full) eg. The normal no. of chromosomes in humans is 46. The child inherits 23 chromosomes from each parent making it a normal 46.
