Suppose you keep a cell in a solution. If the medium surrounding the cell has a higher water concentration than the cell, meaning that the outside solution is very dilute, the cell will gain water by osmosis.Such solution is called Hypotonic solution. Similarly, if the medium has exactly same water concentration as cell, it is isotonic and if it has less then its hypertonic solution

hypotonic solutions --the solution has a lower solute concentration than the cell so water moves into the cell causing plant cells to swell and animal cells to swell and burst.
isotonic solutions  --The concentration of solutes is equal inside and outside the cell so water moves across the membrane in both directions maintaining cell size.

hypertonic solutions --The solution has a higher solute concentration than the cell so water moves out of the cell and into the solution causing the cell to plasmolyze
