In an AP, nth term = a + (n-1)d where a is the first term, d is the common difference.

Hence pth term = q = a + (p-1)d
and    qth term = p = a + (q-1)d

Subtracting any one equation from the other, common difference d = -1
and substituting d = -1 in any on eqation, first term = p+q-1

Hence (p+q)th term = (p+q-1) + {(p+q)-1)}(-1) = 0
