(The electrolyte is a solution of acidified copper sulphate. The anode is impure copper, whereas, the cathode is a strip of pure copper. ) On passing electric current through electrolyte, the pure copper from the anode dissolves into the electrolyte. An equivalent amount of pure copper from the electrolyte is deposited on the cathode. The soluble impurities go into solution, whereas, the insoluble impurities settle down at the bottom of the anode and are known as anode mud.

THE APPARTUS USED FOR THE ELECTROLYTIC REFINING OF COPPER .
THE APPARTUS CONSISTS OF AN ELECTROLYTIC TANK CONTAINING ACIDIFIED COPPER SULPHATE SOLUTION .
A THICK BLOCK OF IMPURE ROD OF COPPER  IS MADE ANODE.
AND A THIN STRIP OF PURE COPPER METAL IS MADE CATHODE.
ON PASSING ELECTRIC CURRENT ,IMPURE COPPER FROM THE ANODE DISSOLVES AND GOES INTO COPPER SULPHATE SOLUTION DEPOSIT ON CATHODE . THUS, PURE METAL IS PRODUCE ON THE CATHODE. THE SOLUBLE IMPURITIES GOES INTO SOLUTION AND FORM ANODE MUD.
