A part of monthly hostel charges in a college is fixed and the remaining depend on the number of days one has taken food in the mess. When a student "A", takes food for 22 days, he has to pay Rs.1380 as hostel charges, whereas a student "B", who takes food for 28 days, pays Rs.1680 hostel charges, find the fixed charge and the cost of food for day.

Let the fixed hostel charges be x
cost of food taken in the mess for 22 days is Rs.1380 - x
cost of food taken in the mess for 28 days is Rs.1680 - x
cost of food taken in the mess for 6 days is Rs 300
so the cost of food for 1 day is Rs. 50
cost for 22 days= 1380 - x = 1100 ⇒ x = Rs. 280
Fixed charge = Rs. 280
the cost of food for 1 day is Rs. 50
