Thee are two Newton's laws of inertia: Inertia of motion and inertia of rest.
Law of inertia of rest: An object that is at rest will stay at rest unless an external force acts upon it.
Law of inertia of motion: An object that is in motion will not change its velocity(both magnitude and direction) unless an external force acts upon it.

These both laws of inertia together makes Newton's first law of motion which can be interpreted as "an object continues to do whatever it happens to be doing unless a force is exerted upon it."

The Newton's law of inertia states that every body resists a change of its state of rest or of uniform motion. This property of each and every body is termed as inertia. Inertia is directly proportional to mass of an object. There are three kinds of Inertia :

1. inertia of rest

2. inertia of motion

3. inertia of direction
