The maximum number of electrons in an energy state n, is given by 2 n²

K shell corresponds to the principal quantum number n = 1.  Hence maximum number of electrons is 2.   The orbitals in K shell are  1s.

L shell corresponds to the principal quantum number n = 2.  Hence maximum number of electrons is 2*2² = 8.   Orbitals are s and p.

M shells with n=3 has a maximum of 2*3² = 18 electrons. Orbitals are s, p and d.

N shell with n=4 will have maximum electrons = 2 * 4² = 32.  Orbitals are s, p , d and f.

The notation K, L, M etc is called the x-ray notation.
