Oceanic plates are the part of Earth's crust under the oceans.  Continental plates are the plates in the Crust layer in the land mass on Earth.  The boundary and the gradual transition between the two plates of a continent and an ocean is the ocean margin.

An ocean margin is quite different from the continental margin on land.  That is why it is significant.
