Between upper and lower epidermis, there is chloroplast-containing photosynthetic tissue called mesophyll.

It is differentiated into "palisade" and "spongy tissue"

Palisade parenchyma contains abundant chloroplasts and helps in photosynthesis.

Spongy parenchyma also contains chloroplasts and are in contact with atmosphere through stomata.

Mesophyll cells are specialized for Photosynthesis. These cells are present in the middle of the leaf which contain many chloroplasts. These are the organelles that perform photosynthesis.
