Based on the kind of bonding between carbon atoms, hydrocarbons are classified into two major groups:
1. Saturated hydrocarbons
2.Unsaturated hydrocarbons


Saturated hydrocarbons are the ones which contain only single bonds between adjacent carbon atoms. 
Alkanes are saturated hydrocarbons.
 Eg: CH₄ (Methane)

Unsaturated hydrocarbons are the ones which contain either double bond or triple bond between two adjacent carbon atoms.
Alkenes are unsaturated hydrocarbons with carbon-carbon double bonds.
Alkynes are unsaturated hydrocarbons with carbon-carbon triple bonds.
Eg: C₂H₄ (Ethene), C₂H₂ (Ethyne)
