Th Abbot of Aberbrothok had tied a bell on a buoy on the Inchcape Rock which rung whenever there were high tides or a sea storm and the rock was hidden. It made the sailors cautious of the Inchcape Rock so they could steer their ships away from the rock and thereby save their ship from striking the Inchcape Rock and getting wrecked. Thus the sailors always blessed the Abbot for such a noble deed.
